SIP Trunk Overview

This topic provides an overview of SIP trunks in NovoOne Platform, including the limitations, supported types and trunk status.

Limitations

You can create up to 50 SIP trunks.
Note: The number of trunks created by your colleagues is also included.

Terminology

Before configuring a SIP trunk, familiarize yourself with the following key terms:

Term Description
SIP Trunk A virtual connection to an upstream provider (ITSP/Carrier) that enables inbound and outbound calling. It defines who can use the channel and how many concurrent calls it can handle.

To use a trunk, you must assign it to a tenant or reseller. Only assigned tenants or resellers can use the trunk for external calls.

DID A phone number (e.g., +1-415-555-0001) assigned to a trunk. Callers can reach a tenant by dialing this number, and the call is delivered through the associated trunk. It can also be used as the outbound caller ID (DOD) for outgoing calls.

Trunk types

NovoOne platform supports the following types of SIP trunks:

Type Description
Register Trunk Authenticates with the trunk provider via username and password through SIP registration, ideal for connecting to third-party ITSPs (Internet Telephony Service Providers).
Peer Trunk Authenticates with the trunk provider by IP address/domain name rather than username and password, and no registration is required. Suitable for direct system-system peering or connecting to providers that support support static IP-based authentication.
Account Trunk Allows the platform to act as a VoIP account provider, enabling external devices (such as gateways or remote systems) to register to the platform using assigned credentials.

Trunk creation methods

The platform provides two methods to create a SIP trunk:

Method Description
Create from a template Use the pre-configured ITSP templates included in the platform to set up a trunk quickly. Simply fill in the required account information to complete the setup.

For more information, see Create a Trunk from a Template.

Create a generic trunk If you cannot find your ITSP in the provider list on the trunk creation page, you can manually create a generic trunk and configure the connection details based on the trunk type you choose.

For more information, see the following topics:

Trunk status

The trunk status indicates the current registration and connectivity state of a SIP trunk, allowing you to check whether the trunk is available.
Tip: You can hover over the trunk status to view detailed information.
Status Description
Disabled The trunk is currently disabled and cannot be used for calls.
Registered / Reachable The trunk is successfully registered or connected, and is ready for use.
Registration Failed The trunk registration attempt failed, possibly due to the following issues:
  • Incorrect username, password, or authentication name
  • Transport type is inconsistent.
  • The remote party refused the connection.
Unreachable The system cannot reach the trunk due to network issue or peer-related problems.
Authentication Failed The system failed to authenticate with the trunk provider.
Tip: Double check the username and password in trunk configuration.

Trunk configuration workflow

The following is the complete workflow for provisioning a SIP trunk and making it ready for use.

1. Create and configure a trunk

Create a trunk from a template or manually, and fill in the required settings based on the trunk type.

For more information, see Create a SIP Trunk.

2. Assign the trunk to tenants or resellers
Assign the trunk to all your own tenants and/or specific resellers to grant them access to this trunk.
  • Tenant: Once assigned, the trunk can be used directly by the tenants you own, and is available when you assign trunk and DID resources to any of the tenants under your account.
  • Reseller: Once assigned, the trunk can be used by the specified resellers, who can then see and select the trunk when assigning trunk and DID resources to their own tenants.
For more information, see Assign a SIP Trunk.
3. Add DID numbers to the trunk
Add DID numbers to the trunk and grant access to all your own tenants or a specific reseller.
  • Tenant: Once assigned, the DID numbers can be used by the tenants you own, and is available when you assign trunk and DID resources to any of the tenants under your account.
  • Reseller: Once assigned, the DID numbers can be used by the specified reseller, who can then see and assign the numbers to their own tenants.
For more information, see Associate DID Numbers with SIP Trunks.
4. Assign the DID numbers to a specific tenant

Assign the DID numbers to specific tenants, enabling them to receive or make external calls through the associated trunk.

For more information, see Assign DID Numbers to a Tenant.
