Emergency Calling Overview

Emergency Calling enables users to place emergency calls to the local Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) while automatically notifying contacts by email or phone call, helping ensure a timely response when an emergency occurs.

Emergency calling terminology

The following table lists key terminologies in Emergency Calling.

Terminology Description
PSAP A Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) is responsible for receiving emergency calls and arranging appropriate emergency response, such as dispatching a police, fire, or ambulance team.
ERL An Emergency Response Location (ERL) is a specific geographic location to which an emergency response team may be dispatched. To provide the PSAP with the emergency caller's precise location, you may need to set multiple ERLs.
ELIN An Emergency Location Identification Number (ELIN) is the phone number (Caller ID), which is associated with an ERL. When an emergency call is placed, the ELIN is displayed on the PSAP side so that they can match the caller ID with the ERL.
Note: ELIN is also helpful for PSAP to call the emergency caller back in case the call is disconnected.

Emergency calling types

NovoOne supports the following types of emergency calling:

Type Description
Basic Emergency Calling Basic Emergency Calling connects a caller to the local Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) without providing the caller's location. The caller must provide location information to the PSAP during the call so that the appropriate emergency response can be arranged.

For more information, see Add an Emergency Number for Basic Emergency Calling.

Enhanced Emergency Calling

Enhanced Emergency Calling is available only in specific countries and regions, such as E911 in North America, E112 in continental Europe, E999 in England, etc.

For enhanced emergency calls, the PSAP can immediately pinpoint the caller's location based on the calling number.

For more information, see Add an Emergency Number for Enhanced Emergency Calling.

Emergency calling Outbound Caller ID

The Outbound Caller ID used for an emergency call determines the ELIN presented to the PSAP. For each emergency number, you can configure one of the following types of Outbound Caller ID:

Type Description
Trunk Emergency Outbound Caller ID
Use the Emergency Outbound Caller ID configured for the trunk used to place the emergency call.
  • If an Emergency Outbound Caller ID is configured for the trunk, the system uses the number.
  • If no Emergency Outbound Caller ID is configured for the trunk, the system uses the trunk's default Outbound Caller ID.

As a result, emergency calls use the same ELIN, regardless of which user places the call.

User Emergency Outbound Caller ID Use the Emergency Outbound Caller ID configured for the user who places the emergency call.
  • If an Emergency Oubound Caller ID is configured for the user, the system uses the number.
  • If no Emergency Outbound Caller ID is configured for the user, the system uses the Emergency Outbound Caller ID configured for the trunk, and then to the trunk's default Outbound Caller ID if neither is configured.

As a result, different users can use different ELINs when placing emergency calls.

Emergency calling notification

NovoOne supports the Emergency Call Dialed Out event, which is triggered when a user dials an emergency number. Upon triggering, the system can notify designated contacts by email or phone call, helping ensure that they are promptly informed of the emergency call.
